Report from Remuera Zone Athletics

The day started with a bang, literally, when Kendall found herself on her knees as she was tripped going around the first bend in the 800 metres. After picking herself up Kendall remained composed as she ran a tactical race, gradually overtaking those in front…her second place was an absolute credit to her determination. Jack also raced 800metres and came third after finally finding a gap to sneak past a group that had managed to keep him at bay for some distance.

Our four relay teams were next to compete in their heats and they all progressed to their finals. The 60, 80 and 100 metre heats along with the range of field events followed. All the children represented us proudly, many of them gaining places in their events. Altogether our 26 children received 24 1st place,13 2nd place and 2 3rd place certificates in the heats.

The following children earned places in finals.

Thomas Manson – 3rd place Year 5 ball throw, Vita Ahokovi 3rd place Year 6 ball throw

Ben Kelsey 3rd place 60m, 2nd place 80m

Sunny Zou 2nd place 60m

Vakho Mestvirishvili 3rd place 60m

Kendall Vaughan 2nd place 800m, Jack McConnell 3rd place 800m

Year 5 relay – 3rd – Emelda Braun, Kathryn Haley, Shania Gates and Heleine Langi

Year 6 relay – 1st - Zia van Niekerk, Jacqueline Alexander, Jessica Shilton and Kendall Vaughan

Thank you to our parents who supported the children, as well as providing and serving refreshments for all the officials.

Our children were AMAZING!!!

Zone Athletics Tuesday 22 November

Our group of 28 children represent us in the zone event this week.

Over the last week most of the children have risen to the challenge of attending practices as we learn how to run a relay around the track. This has required a completely different baton change to what the children have previously done as well as them becoming used to running around bends while keeping in a lane. Two more practices on Monday and we will be ready!

Mr Davies has done a great job of creating a track for us which is appreciated as it would be hard if we were in an unmarked area. Mrs Walker and Mrs McConnell have also assisted in the training process - thank you all.

Good luck to everyone in the team.
